The Ligue 1 season has taken shape and is now well underway after all 20 sides have played 21 matches. Matchweek 22 starts on Friday night as Marseille make the trip to Caen with both teams able to move up the table with a win. Caen are 10th and can go as high as 7th with three points while Marseille are 3rd and can leapfrog Lyon into 2nd with a win.
The recent record between these two sides doesn’t make good reading for Caen fans as their side have been beaten in all four of the last four meetings and last beat Marseille back in 2015. Caen have conceded 10 goals in the last two fixtures with the French giants despite scoring just one themselves and a repeat of last season’s five-goal hammering wouldn’t go down well. Thauvin got two in Marseille’s 5-0 win over Caen in the reverse fixture in November.
A big win for Caen would see them move onto the cups of the European places and a run of good results could push them into those but without their suspended goalkeeper, Remy Vercoutre, they might struggle. Christian Kouakou and Jordan Tell have just returned from injuries while Valentin Voisin and Adama Mbengue won’t feature due to injury. Latest matches: Olympique Marseille

While catching PSG is still a long way off for Marseille, they will overtake Lyon with a win over Caen as Lyon play at the weekend. The visitors are without Gregory Sertic and Jordan Amavi for the clash as both players are currently injured. Latest matches: Olympique Marseille

Marseille must be considered favourites for the three points in Friday night’s fixture due to their much stronger side but they can’t be complacent against a decent Caen team. The hosts will be hoping for their fans to inspire a strong performance against one of France’s top sides.
